Who are we?
Our names are Alex and Jess. We are a normal (open to interpretation!) couple in our early 30s who have been together for more than 10 years.
We met in London and we’ve been living, partying, studying and working in and around the city ever since.
In what is probably quite a familiar story, we quietly progressed with our careers, enjoyed a degree of affluence and security and more recently moved out of the city to the ‘burbs. So far so boring and this is where most people stop… and there is nothing really wrong with that. However, we both have a persistent and nagging feeling that the comfortable but monotonous life we lead cannot possibly be IT.
We want there to be another way.
What are we doing?
We are quitting our jobs, packing up our lives, farming our cats and car out to unsuspecting friends, renting out our house and embarking on a (grown up) backpacker adventure through South and Central America! Sounds quite scary and it bloody is!
Why are we doing it?
We’ve worked so many hours, weeks, months and years for other people/corporations. We’ve found that we spend the majority of our free time winding down from the daily grind and the rest of it preparing ourselves to do it all over again the next week. We are taught what to expect from life and what we should consume, but that does not bring us any lasting joy.
Our jobs have come to define us and our own voices have become a very tiny wail in the background. We want to break out of the hive and become freer individuals.
We’ve invested so much in our precious holiday time, and been lucky enough to be able to afford some wonderful experiences, but we inevitably return exhausted and sick. Our last two big holidays were to Cuba and Peru, and we give huge credit to those two inspiring countries for slowly slowly allowing a light bulb to be switched on – we want to do this full time!
